How to Use Public Transportation in Miami

Whether you’re traveling with family, a friend or just want to save money while visiting the Magic City, there are plenty of ways to get around Miami without a car. In addition to rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, there are also options for public transportation.

Buses

The Metrobus system covers most of Miami-Dade County and part of southern Broward County, including Coral Gables, Little Havana, Homestead, Florida City, Liberty City and Key Biscayne. The system serves most major shopping, entertainment and cultural centers. It also provides daily service to Miami International Airport and the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station.

Metrorail

The 25-mile Metrorail system is a fast, affordable way to get from the airport to Kendall, downtown Miami, the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area and Brownsville, Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in Northwest Miami-Dade. Its stations have free Wi-Fi and bicycle racks.

Trains are very frequent and arrive every 90 seconds during rush hours and every three minutes during off-peak times. Prices depend on when you board, but Brightline offers monthly travel pass options.

Metromover

The automated people mover is a great option for those looking to avoid Downtown and Brickell traffic. It circles the downtown area from 5 a.m. to midnight daily, and has stops at FTX Arena (home to the Miami Heat), Bayside Marketplace and the Downtown campus of Miami Dade College.

It’s free to ride and a great option for tourists or residents who aren’t familiar with the city. Riders can pay their fare by using an EASY Card, a reloadable smart card, the Easy Card app, contactless payment, or cash.

Jitneys

There are several jitney companies in Miami, and these vehicles run on the same routes as buses but without the periodic stops made by buses. They are licensed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works.

To ride a jitney, you have to order it by phone or from an operator and give the driver your destination. The ride is not as fast as a bus, but it’s convenient and affordable, especially when there aren’t many other vehicles on the road.

Citi Bike

This solar-powered bike sharing program has docking stations throughout the city. Its blue-branded bikes are instantly recognizable and are available by the half-hour ($4.95), hour ($6.95) or day ($24).

Jitneys can be a fun way to explore Miami, but they’re not as reliable as buses. They’re also not as easy to find, so it can be challenging to get on and off without a reservation or a call ahead.

The easiest way to get around Miami without a car is to take public transit. The Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus systems have stations across the city.

There’s no need to worry about parking fees in Miami: All of these systems offer free or inexpensive parking options for their users. If you’re planning to visit a lot of attractions, we recommend purchasing the Go Miami pass, which includes free parking.

The best way to navigate the transportation options in Miami is to plan your trip, download the city’s travel apps and use them to map out your route. There are also online maps, which can help you determine the best route for your journey.
